Photography for Travellers

Old Fashioned Advice from the New Generation

Paul Dymond is one of the nice guys of the Australian travel media. A talented photographer and handy writer, he has chosen to stick with what he knows best in recent years and spend his spare time shooting travel and sharing his skills. Paul's blog is down to earth and worth a regular review.

I've had a chance to get to know Paul in recent years, mostly on the end of a phone or through his blog. Paul won the ASTW award for Travel Photographer of the Year in 2003 but has changed his working career to focus on image libraries and commission work. His blog reflects a depth of knowledge backed by his friendly personality. In short, Paul is keen to help others learn.

For a few years he ran one-off photo workshops in the Cairns area. Once his children grow a little taller he hopes he can start running those again, but for now the demands of being a parent comes first.

His blog covers a wide amount of territory, from purely technical considerations to questions of conscience. I don't always agree entirely with his advice, photographers never do, but I often find his blog entries stir my own imagination. Paul is also a useful advocate of Digital Asset Management (DAM) and has made the most of the DAM approach to his own image collection.
