Lessons from David Labelle

I've never met David Labelle but his name was sent my way by a friend of his. Rummaging through a trail of internet crumbs I dug around and found out more about this stranger than I imagined possible. And was glad I did.

I like this guy, he has a sense of fun about the photographic arts and an earthy grounded style to his advice. He's not too caught up with techniques, as the titles of his books suggest.

"The Art and Ethics of Feature Picture Hunting"

"I don't want to know all the technical stuff...
I just want to shoot pictures"

In recent years he's been making cameo appearances on the TV in Pheonix AZ, sharing his style and wisdom with the great unwashed. Lovely. I'd love to have David come and join one of my regular photo tours and offer wild-card opinions along the journey - we could call it "Heckling your way to better photos" :)

Too many people take their photography too seriously. A little heckling is healthy. David says he does two things, Humour and Compassion. We could all use more of that in our lives.

A really detailed and well produced collection of videos reveal some insights into the ideas and life of David Labelle, filmed and published by Francis Gardler. It starts with a poignant collection of images Labelle shot for a project to put a face to the homeless people of America. (www.pictureswithpurpose.org).
